Designed for highly motivated and intellectually adventurous students, the African American Studies program allows you to learn about the history, culture and contemporary situations of African Americans in South Carolina, the South, the U.S. and beyond.

The program is set apart from other universities by its research specializations in South Carolina's black communities, particularly in civil rights era, black women's history and sea islands language and literature. As an African American Studies major, you will be exposed to exciting and rigorous coursework and develop an understanding of race and the African American experience, as well as the dynamics of the African diaspora. Through required coursework, you will be able to develop service-learning experience by applying your knowledge in local civic organizations, public agencies, churches and institutes of research.

African American Studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines the history, culture, beliefs and actions of people of African descent in the United States and across the world. With a major in African American Studies, you can:

• Explore the multi-dimensional experiences of people of color in local and global contexts.
