Nearly 20 percent of the world’s population speaks Chinese, and its cultural traditions stretch thousands of years. Chinese studies students will have a chance to learn from professors whose interests range from Tang Dynasty poetry to Qing Dynasty trade routes, Taiwanese pop music and contemporary Chinese cinema. Furthermore, China’s impact on the global economy continues to grow significantly, making Chinese a great complement to an international business major.
Established in 2014, the Chinese studies major is one of the university's newest majors. The four core faculty members in the Chinese program are distinguished scholars who offer courses in Chinese culture that range from medieval poetry to contemporary film, drama and media.
Language instruction in the Chinese program is supported by the Confucius Institute at USC. Every semester, the program sponsors academic and cultural events either independently or in collaboration with the Confucius Institute, the Center for Asian Studies or other organizations in the university.
A major in Chinese studies can prepare you for careers in:
- Education
- Interpreting
- Travel and hospitality
- International business
