Academic Accelerator Program (AAP) is a balanced first-year program for international students with good English-language skills. It supplements immersive classes taught in English with just the right amount of support.

The Department of Sociology at USC offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Sociology.  A sociology degree gives you the research, communication and analytical skills you need to compete in today’s marketplace or to pursue graduate work in a variety of fields. 

As a sociology major, you will explore complex issues of power, inequality, justice, crime, poverty and conflict. You will learn to question common sense, raise significant questions, examine arguments, synthesize information, analyze data, make conclusions and present information orally and in writing.

You can take advantage of outstanding facilities that include the Laboratory for Sociological Research, one of the largest facilities of its type in the world, as well as a demography library, a statistics laboratory and two activity rooms for student research projects and observations.

Our program emphasis on training students in research and on topical areas provides the following skills:

  • Analyzing data and using statistical tools
  • Interpreting research to communicate findings to broad audiences
  • Designing research
  • Solving problems creatively
  • Collaborating in the design and presentation of research
  • Bringing critical thinking to current social problems
  • Communicating effectively
  • Providing different explanations for social problems

These skills, and many others acquired in the pursuit of a degree in sociology, are highly transferable to jobs such as:
