The Undergraduate UMass Boston Navitas GSSP is the first year of a bachelor’s degree program at UMass Boston. The Navitas GSSP consists of for-credit coursework and provides an academic and cultural bridge from the high school experience to studying at a university in the United States. When students successfully complete the UMass Boston Navitas GSSP, they will progress directly into the second year of their undergraduate degree program.
The criminology and criminal justice major provides a social scientific grounding to issues of crime and criminal justice. Students explore the nature of criminal behavior (deviance vs. conformity) and its causes, as well as society’s responses, through statistics-based research and coursework in subjects such as mental illness, law, substance abuse, immigration, criminology, and gender. The major is approved by the Commonwealth’s Board of Higher Education for Quinn Bill benefits.
Many graduates of the program pursue advanced degrees in criminology, forensic services, or dispute resolution. Other alumni progress into careers in fields such as law enforcement, legal services, corrections, and security consulting.
