Students in the BA in English learn how to write clearly and effectively and to think critically and construct well-supported arguments.
The program stresses the formal aesthetic qualities of texts and the issues of class, gender, race and ethnicity relating to literary representation. Students gain a familiarity with standard literary-critical terminology and an awareness of various theoretical approaches to literary study. Students also become aware of uses of the English language in the U.S. and around the world.
The program provides students with a balanced overview of major literature in the English language and an awareness of the role of literary discourse in broader social and historical contexts.
Upon completion, students are prepared for graduate study and professional training in law, business, teaching and public policy, and for careers in marketing, public relations, government, diplomacy and community work.
