Program Description

Studying politics, philosophy and economics will help students understand the ideas and theories which shape the world. Students will learn how and why these subjects are intrinsically linked, and how they've developed alongside each other.

Students will also develop analytical skills to help them evaluate the impact of government policies on programmes.

Students will learn how to understand things from multiple perspectives and think creatively about problem solving. The faculty's teaching is informed by real-world events that are happening now, so students will be using the knowledge and techniques they've learned to tackle current issues.

For example, students might examine the impact of government policies aimed at addressing climate change, healthcare, education, and financial crisis. The University of Sheffield's strong links with employers mean that students will be equipped with the analytical skills that they look for when they graduate.

Students will have have the flexibility to specialise in their area of interest. For instance, they could choose to explore modules in international relations, economic history, the philosophy of religion, or macroeconomics.

The University of Sheffield has a partnership with the Civil Service, and they support students in gaining employment experience during their degree.  Students are encouraged to spend a year working for governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other third sector employers focused on public policy.

Students will also have the option to spend a year studying abroad in order to develop their skills and understanding of politics, philosophy and economics in a global setting.

Students can specialise in quantitative economics and convert to a BSc Politics, Philosophy and Economics.

In the final year, students will complete a PPE dissertation supported by a dissertation tutor.
