Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Civil Engineering with a Year in Industry (2H26) at The University of Sheffield: Tuition Fee: £25,670.00 GBP / Year (Scholarship Available)
Program Description
This course teaches a broad range of civil engineering disciplines, giving students a solid industry perspective. In the first two years, students will concentrate on the core disciplines of structural engineering, water infrastructure engineering, fluid mechanics, and geotechnical mechanics, from both an analysis and a design perspective.
The second half of the course will allow students to focus on more specialised and advanced water engineering areas such as coastal engineering, groundwater engineering, fluid dynamics, flood risk, sustainable drainage and water resources and their independent research projects.
Between second year and final year, students will arrange a year working in an engineering company. This industrial experience could be on site, in an office or a combination of both and will put their academic studies into context, improve skills and enhance employment prospects. Students will be responsible for finding their own placements; however, the departmental and faculty careers and employability teams will support them in this process.
During final year, students will spend a full semester doing the Integrated Design Project. The project encourages them to unleash their creativity on a grand scale by devising plans for an entire urban regeneration project based on a real site in Sheffield. Students will investigate new design methods and construction materials while developing detailed designs such as elegant bridges, sustainable and environmentally sensitive multi-storey buildings, or state-of-the-art sports venues. It'll give students invaluable project experience and a feel for the kind of issues they may encounter in their careers.
All teaching is delivered by research-active academic staff or university teachers with extensive industrial experience. The course challenges students to solve increasingly complex problems and gives a solid understanding of fundamental engineering principles. Students graduate as skilled, competent and well-rounded engineers who can confidently approach complex global problems.
Accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). It also partially satisfies the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). A programme of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.
