Fall & Spring 2023 Applications Are Still Open!

Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Mathematics and Meteorology (with a Placement Year) (GF20) at University of Reading: Tuition Fee: £23,700.00 GBP / Year (Scholarship Available)

In this BSc Mathematics and Meteorology course students will explore the physics of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans in a mathematical context whilst learning how to build effective numerical models.

Modern weather forecasting and climate prediction rely upon accurate numerical modelling of the atmosphere and oceans. This course will enable students to develop their mathematics skills whilst gaining a broad knowledge of meteorology and environmental physical science. Graduates will spend roughly equal amounts of time studying each subject.

In mathematics students will study the theory and application of differential equations, underpinned by a knowledge of calculus, analysis and linear algebra. They will be given plenty of support to help them get the most out of their studies, including small group problem-solving tutorials and materials to help them manage the transition to university-level mathematics.

In meteorology students will explore the inner workings of weather systems from a physical and dynamic viewpoint. The course is theory-based and will cover subjects such as atmospheric physics, numerical methods, climate change, and weather and climate fundamentals. In the second year they will also take a skills module, which is designed to improve their transferable skills and enhance their employability.

Between the second and final year, students will carry out a paid industrial training placement, lasting around 12 months. Placements can be located anywhere in the UK, and occasionally take place abroad. Students could take on a wide variety of roles such as statistician, analyst, actuarial intern and radiation protection scientist. They will also have the chance to work for a range of national and international organizations such as Microsoft, IBM, SAP or the NHS.
