Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Mathematics (G100) at The University of Sheffield: Tuition Fee: £22,520.00 GBP / Year (Scholarship Available)
Program Description
This flexible course gives students the freedom to explore lots of different areas of maths or tailor their course to their own interests. Once students have mastered the essentials of pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and probability and statistics, they will be able to choose from a wide variety of options. Topics range from differential geometry or algebraic topology, to codes and cryptography, or the theory of relativity.
A small but focused number of modules in the first year cover all the essentials needed for the rest of the degree. Students can develop programming skills using Python and R, which can be applied to lots of jobs that involve data, and learn to use the typesetting software LaTeX, which mathematicians and statisticians use to present their work.
In second year, students will continue to build a powerful toolbox of mathematical techniques that they can apply to increasingly complex problems. There are less compulsory maths and more options, so in addition to calculus and algebra, students can study a variety of topics including differential equations, the mechanics of motion in fluids and solids, statistical modelling, and computer simulations.
A module on careers development gives students the chance to find out about different career paths, learn about potential employers, write an impressive CV, and excel at job interviews.
By third year, students are equipped with the skills, knowledge and experience to explore many different areas of mathematics. There are lots of optional modules to choose from, so students can study topics that best align with their unique aspirations.
