Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Medical Genetics (C431) at The University of Sheffield: Tuition Fee: £25,670.00 GBP / Year (Scholarship Available)

Program Description

This course teaches a broad understanding of genetics, with an emphasis on topics of medical relevance. Students will learn how genetic information can be used in medicine.

The course spans human, plant and microbial genetics, genomics, and molecular biology. Students will explore the genetic basis of cell function and disease as well as the structure and expression of genes, inheritance and mutations. Students will also learn about the latest molecular techniques for modifying genes, including CRISPR. Additionally, students learn how the study of modern genetics helps researchers understand and treat a range of diseases, as well as tackle global challenges like food sustainability and security.

From their first year, students will study modules that span the molecular biosciences covering genetics, biochemistry and molecular and cell biology. Alongside these modules, students will have the freedom to explore complementary topics across the breadth of bioscience, such as microbiology, biomedicine, ecology, plant science, and zoology. This gives them the option to study medical genetics in greater depth, keep their interests broad, or even switch to another degree programme within the biosciences.

No matter what modules students choose to study, they will develop the practical laboratory and transferable skills that make graduates attractive to employers, including project management, problem solving, communication skills and data analysis.

Students also get plenty of opportunities to apply their new skills and knowledge. They will be in the lab completing in-depth practicals across molecular genetics, DNA manipulation, and protein structure analysis. Additionally, they will get the chance to use cutting-edge equipment to run their own research projects in an area such as clinical diagnostics or brewing biotechnology.

This course is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology, which shows employers understanding of the practical skills and scientific knowledge that they're looking for.
