Program Description

This microbiology course explores the fundamental role that tiny organisms play in the world. Students will study the importance of bacteria, viruses, and other microbes in the environment and as pathogens. Students will discover how to manipulate their genetic makeup to put microbes to good use in biotechnology. They will also learn how to tackle the threat of antimicrobial-resistant infections, and understand the role that microbiology continues to play in supporting the global response to pandemics such as Covid-19. Students also have the opportunity to do a year-long, paid work placement as part of their degrees.

The University of Sheffield's students have found placements at global pharmaceutical companies such as GSK, Pfizer, and Unilever, but placements do not have to be in the lab. For example, students could apply their scientific knowledge and transferable skills within or outside of the bioscience industry, such as in market research, communications, or business development. A placement is a great opportunity to test out a career path, and many students are offered a graduate-level job at the end. Students also pay reduced fees for the year of placement while still getting value-added support from their tutors and the University.

Students get plenty of opportunities to apply their new skills and knowledge. Students will be in the lab completing in-depth practicals across molecular genetics, DNA manipulation, and protein structure analysis. Students will also get the chance to use cutting-edge equipment to run their own in-depth research projects.
