Anytime a product is purchased or sold, a retail transaction has occurred. Retailing is truly powerful because it exists everywhere, and it sustains the economy with a diverse range of goods and services. A farmer's market vendor and a national furniture chain, a local coffee shop and an international manufacturer of women's apparel. They all represent retail businesses — large and small — who fuel the world's economy.

The world of retailing extends well beyond the sales floor of your favorite department store. In fact, the variety and abundance of career opportunities in the retailing industry is enough to make your head spin! You may choose to specialize in fashion merchandising and work in fashion brand management, distribution, visual merchandising or you could become a buyer. Your degree in retailing could also prepare you for a career in franchise management, licensing, supply management, sales forecasting, product theft management or business ownership.

The Retailing program in the College of HRSM is different than similar programs across the nation in that it offers two distinct areas of focus — Retail Management and Fashion Merchandising. Both prepare you with business fundamentals such as accounting, economics, business law, communications and computer applications.

Retail Management presents a broader scope of retail, where products and services can be be anything and everything, from culinary gadgets to fitness classes to monogrammed stationery. Fashion Merchandising, on the other hand, is dedicated to helping you develop a deeper understanding of everything fashion—from Fashion Product Analysis (RETL 368) to Fashion and the Law (RETL 530).

Your internship experiences will also present you with an opportunity to work in a setting that is specific to your passion.
