The MMus in Composition and Sonic Art allows students to develop their skills and understanding of contemporary practices in music composition and sonic art. The programme will equip students with the knowledge required to compose in a range of styles and genres, while enabling them to develop high-level skills in a compositional field of their choice. Students will learn more about the concepts of research-led practice, and will hone high-level transferable skills in critical thinking, conceptual thinking, problem solving, analysis, communication, self-direction, creativity and originality.

Specialism is offered in a range of styles and genres, including writing for instruments and/or voices, acousmatic composition, composition for live musicians with electronics, popular song composition, and composing for film, television and other media.

They will work closely with professional composers and established researchers, most of whom have international profiles. The School enjoys close links with industrial and third-sector partners such as Music Theatre Wales, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Blipfonica, and it is often possible for students to undertake a work placement during the course of the programme.

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum Level of Education Required: 4-Year Bachelor's Degree
  • Min GPA: 60.0% 
  • English Proficiency Requirements:
    For direct admission, applicant must be from an English speaking country or meet either of the following English test scores:
    • Min IELTS overall: 6 (Min Listening: 5.5, Min Reading: 5.5, Min Speaking: 5.5, Min Writing: 5.5)
    • Min PTE overall: 56 (Min Listening: 51, Min Reading: 51, Min Speaking: 51, Min Writing: 51)
    Applicants interested in applying for direct admission, but are yet to complete an acceptable language test, can do so, but must provide valid results before receiving a final offer letter.
    For conditional admission, you are required to provide English proficiency scores:
    • Min TOEFL iBT: 32
    • Min IELTS overall: 4 (Min Listening: 4, Min Reading: 4, Min Speaking: 4, Min Writing: 4)
    • Min PTE overall: 30 (Min Listening: 30, Min Reading: 30, Min Speaking: 30, Min Writing: 30)
