Mechatronics systems are used nearly everywhere in society. They range from CD and DVD players to computer hard disks, anti-lock braking systems, and "fly-by-wire" control systems for commercial jets. Each of these products is essentially mechanical in nature, but could not function without electrical and computer control systems. Mechatronics engineering combines mechanical engineering, electronics, control engineering, and computer science to design systems such as those listed above. Waterloo's is the first undergraduate Mechatronics program in Canada. Students will find an emphasis on teamwork and practical applications throughout the program and especially in their design project courses. With 2 years of paid co-op experience, students will get a head start on their career through the valuable skills they will develop, the contacts students will make, and the money they earn through their 6 co-op work terms.

  For direct admission, applicant must be from an English speaking country or meet either of the following English test scores:

  • Min TOEFL iBT: 90 (Min Speaking: 25.0, Min Writing: 25.0)

  • Min IELTS overall: 6.5 (Min Listening: 6.0, Min Reading: 6.0, Min Speaking: 6.5, Min Writing: 6.5)

  • Min Duolingo English Test Score: 120

  • Min PTE overall: 63 (Min Speaking: 65, Min Writing: 65)

  For conditional admission, you are required to provide English proficiency scores:

  • Min TOEFL iBT: 64

  • Min IELTS overall: 5.5 (Min Writing: 5)

  • Min PTE overall: 46
