Art History is the study of various mediums of art and their changes over time. Studied mediums include painting, sculpture, graphic arts, and other visual forms. The histories of these mediums are compared alongside political, religious, and cultural shifts. Students learn to examine and scrutinize artwork through spoken and written word. Coursework also includes the study of the impact history and art have had on one another. Courses include:
- Greek and Roman
- Renaissance and Baroque
- Contemporary Art
- 19th-21st Century European and American Art
The Albritton Art Institute focuses on 19th and 20th century European and American artists. Each semester, the institute provides fully-funded field studies that allow students to observe and analyze artwork firsthand. Past destinations include New York City, Chicago, Vienna, and Venice.
The Martin Museum of Art is housed inside the art building. Besides its permanent collection, the Martin hosts gallery talks and annual student and faculty exhibits. The Martin also showcases guest artists.
Many Art History graduates continue their studies in graduate school. Others have gained employment in museums, art galleries, auction houses, or arts organizations.
