Learning how to communicate in German and studying the culture of German-speaking regions is interesting and fun. We have a great program here at USF with a variety of classes (language, film, literature, linguistics, and culture), a close-knit community of language learners and instructors, and frequent German-themed cultural events (e.g. Oktoberfest, Fasching, Stammtisch, etc.).

Studying German is an excellent choice that will advance your professional career after graduation. Studying German is also fun. German and English both belong linguistically to the branch of Germanic languages and are therefore "sister languages" with similar vocabulary and grammatical structures. This makes it easier for an English native speaker to learn German. 

The concentration in German prepares students to understand and critically evaluate the language and cultures of German-speaking countries. The program prepares students in communicative proficiency and cultural literacy so that they are able to competently engage in global and transcultural interactions in the 21st century. Students will be prepared for positions in education, international business, foreign affairs, the arts, politics, and international law.

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum Level of Education Required: Grade 12 / High School
  • Min GPA: 77.0% 
  • English Proficiency Requirements:
    For direct admission, applicant must be from an English speaking country or meet either of the following English test scores:
    • Min TOEFL iBT: 79
    • Min IELTS overall: 6.5
    • Min Duolingo English Test Score: 105
    • Min PTE overall: 53
