Fall & Spring 2023 Applications Are Still Open!

Bachelors of Science (BSc) in Biomedical Engineering at Yeditepe University: 12,500/year (Scholarship Available)

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary field of engineering that applies the fundamental engineering principles and methods to solve health-care related problems using advanced quantitative and analytical techniques. The main goal of this study is to utilize engineering methods to help people live longer, higher quality and healthier lives.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Yeditepe University was founded in 2004. The first group of students graduated from the department in 2008. Currently, the department consists of five full-time faculty and over two hundred fifty undergraduate students.

The main areas of research of the faculty are production of new biomaterials for dental and medical applications, photobiology, photochemistry, development of novel medical imaging techniques, and design of novel medical instruments and devices like electronic implants.

The department has several high quality laboratory facilities including Biomedical Electronics, Biomedical Instrumentation, Biomaterials (X-ray Diffraction), Medical Imaging, Microprocessor and Microcontroller, and Optical Spectroscopy labs.

The undergraduate curriculum consists of courses in basic sciences, engineering sciences, biology, physiology, engineering design and management, social and economical sciences, and Turkish language and history. All the courses are taught in English.

The freshman year consists of classes to build a foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, scientific computing, engineering design and an introduction to biomedical engineering. The sophomore year includes courses in biological and medical physics, biomechanics, physiology, electrical circuits, electromagnetic fields and waves, and biomaterials. The junior year curriculum offers courses in biomedical electronics and instrumentation, sensors and transducers, and signals and systems. The senior year curriculum includes courses in microprocessors and microcontrollers, medical imaging and six technical elective courses.

Technical elective courses are designed to further educate students in several specialized areas of biomedical engineering, including orthopedic cements for hard tissue repair, biomedical and dental graft materials, biometry for analytical reasoning and modeling, pain management techniques, expert systems in biomedical engineering, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) and medical image processing and computing.

Many of the courses include a laboratory component where students receive hands-on training in the instruments, technologies, principles, or techniques taught in the course.

Senior students are expected to complete an engineering project during which they work closely with the faculty and conduct research that may produce conference proceedings, publications and patents.

Through internships, students find the opportunity to work at prestigious private companies, hospitals, medical centers or research centers.

The students are encouraged to participate in international student exchange programs like ERASMUS program.

Double major and minor programs in connection with the other engineering departments at Yeditepe University are also offered by the department.

Graduates are well-prepared to enter the workforce in industry with medical products companies or medical centers and hospitals, or pursue advanced education in graduate school
