UWF has one of the largest and most active terrestrial and maritime archaeology programs and facilities in the Southeast.

UWF specializes in student-centered research and have continuous opportunities for student's professional development in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology Institute.

UWF emphasizes multidisciplinary and collaborative study and research. UWF provides many supervisory field method courses and specialized internship opportunities.

The faculty includes two terrestrial archaeologists (prehistoric and historic), two maritime archaeologists, two biological anthropologists (forensic and bio-archaeology) and one medical anthropologist. In addition to faculty in the Department of Anthropology, students in the master's degree programs benefit from additional archaeology faculty members housed within the Archaeology Institute and Florida Public Archaeology Network Northwest Regional Center.

 

UWF offers research assistantships in terrestrial and maritime archaeology.

The historical archaeology specialization is designed for students with a strong interest in the archaeology of the post-Columbus period and the combined use of documents and archaeology. Students will take courses in cultural resource management and historical research methods in archaeology, along with three electives and thesis research.

Admission Requirements

  • Minimum Level of Education Required: 4-Year Bachelor's Degree
  • Min GPA: 77.0% 
  • English Proficiency Requirements:
    For direct admission, applicant must be from an English speaking country or meet either of the following English test scores:
    • Min TOEFL iBT: 79 (Min Listening: 19.0)
    • Min IELTS overall: 6.5 (Min Listening: 7.0)
    For conditional admission, instead of submitting language proficiency test scores, applicants may complete English courses prior to the academic program. The length of the English course is determined based on the applicant's level of English proficiency.
